iPad Apps for Teachers




iPad Apps for Teachers
I went to a TechEDGE conference Tuesday and I typed up apps to use in the classroom. If you have any favorites to add that I don't have here (for education) please leave me a note so I can add it. A
·      ABA Problem Solving (several of these)(Speech and language program)
·      ABA sight words (Dolch sight words ages 3-8)
·      ABA Talk, Phonics Short Vowel (reinforces recognition of short vowel CVC words. It is really just a game where the player, fires at fish coming at the ship. They must fire at or touch the specific short vowel they choose)
·      ABC LITE (Dr. Seuss’s ABC’s-same as Cat LITE)
·      ABC Notes (A free app for making sticky notes reminders of the teacher or matching/sorting/etc. games for the student.)
·      ABC Magic Reading 2 (Practices phonetic reading and spelling. This is a great app for students needing phonics and decoding practice.)
·      ABC Spelling Magic (Practices phonetic reading and spelling. This is a great app for students needing phonics and decoding practice.)
·      ABC Writing (Montessori approach. Full Version has 73 word families and 630 Vocab words. Lite version has 40 word families and 300 vocab.)
·      Amazing Coin (Teaches students how to learn, count, paying, making change, matching, etc.)
·      App Shopper (Tells you what apps are on sale or for free.)
·      Audio Note LITE (tape recorder with note pad that allows you to take notes during a recording and have both recorded together for reference)
·      Autism DX (Dr. Gary Brown’s Autism DX/Treatment is a short informational applet that is designed to help you find the proper diagnosis and treatment of your child who is on the Autism)
·      Autism Tracker (Track what matters to your child and your family. Use the visual calendar and multi-item graphs to view and discuss patterns. Share individual events or entire screens with your team using email or Twitter (closed group).
·      Alphabet Car (simple and fun game in which you drive a vehicle towards letters that spell out the word provided to you at the bottom of the screen)
·      Alpha Cards Combo Pack (Flash cards for Dolch site cards, can trace lowercase and uppercase letters and numbers, says letters and words aloud, word families-PK-1st grade on free version)

·      Blackboard Apps (allows you to quickly access your Blackboard account)
·      Bob Books (magic #1 & 2) (Basic phonics reading of word families. Teaches kids how to read.)
·      Book Creator (Make books)
·      Brain Pop (Short three to five minute animated movies. They have a new movie of the day or you can choose from a list according to subject matter. After the movie there are six to seven comprehension questions, they are multiple choice. Would be great for lit. centers grades 3-5)
·      Brainstorming (make a list of ideas in 1.5 minutes)

C
·      Calculator Pro Free (Calculate grades, or do math problems projected for the students.)
·      Captions (edit photos and add your own captions)
·      Cat LITE (The Cat in the Hat, by Dr. Seuss. Children’s book that reads to child or allows the child to read, supplying any words the child needs help with. Clicking on any picture produces the vocabulary word orally and in print)
·      Candy Count (Teaches students to count and sort.)
·      Collaborize Classroom (Online collaborative education platform for students and teachers. Engages students in online activities, assignments and discussions that allow deeper participation inside and outside the classroom. Register Online.)
·      Comic Book (turn yourself or your friends into superheroes or villains in a realistic comic book. You can even publish it online)
·      Course Smart (etextbooks) (Read, annotate, highlight, and share my ideas with others. Online textbooks.)
·      Comic Touch LITE (Simply touch and hold on any picture on the Internet and save photo. These photos will appear in Comic Touch allowing you to add speech bubbles, thought bubbles, and captions. Use a picture of something your student likes and create a book page of words the child can read)


D
·      dictionary.com (This dictionary/Thesaurus app is all offline so you don’t need an internet connection to access it.)
·      Doceri (Turn you iPad into a wireless whiteboard! Connect your laptop to a projector to present and draw from your iPad as you walk around the room.)
·      DocScan HD (Takes a picture of the document, scans it, crates a PDF, and emails.)
·      Dolch Words (200+ sight words it has list pre-primer through third grade. Each word is said aloud and the student can repeat the word by touching the screen. The student then spells the word on the screen with their finger tracing the dotted lines of the word. Great application for building vocabulary and spelling.)
·      Doodle Buddy (finger painting online, allows students to write similarly to a sand tray-can save to pictures to use in our story)
·      Dr. Seuss’s ABC LITE (eBooks ready to read or have read to students, highlights word being read, shows vocabulary when a picture is touched.)
·      Dragon Dictation (speech to type program that listens to voice and then prints it out in a word document)
·      Drawcast (allows you to draw pictures to review reading or begin writing)
·      Dropbox (Free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. Any file you save to your dropbox is accessible from all your computers, iPhone, iPad, and even the Dropbox website!)

E
·      eBook Creator (The simplest and easiest ebook creation app. Its interface is designed so that young kids are able to make ebooks.)
·      Ebook magic (Create ebooks by saving pictures and adding text at the student’s reading level and publish with the touch of a button to iBooks or send a url to parents.)
·      Educreations (Draw, add pictures, and record your voice to tell a story.)
·      English Idioms Illustrated (Illustrated idioms)
·      Sight words! (3 Games for PK-K)
·      Evernote (Keeps you organized across all your devices. Notes, photos, to-do lists, record voice reminders.)

·      Fluency Timer Free (Adjustable timer that automatically records students’ fluency readings for playback and sharing.)
·      Fluency 2 (Uses bugs as a fun way to teach children to read fluently)
·      Grammar Express: Parts of speech (Contains over 130 pages of lessons with expanations.)
·      Grammar Express: Tenses (Grammar rules, study the examples and then quiz.)

·      Reading Logs (is a free app, but you have to register online at readinglogs.com to get full access to the app. Once you do that you can save reading logs, vocab lists, and spelling lists. Then the app has games, access to list, and activities to practice and reinforce spelling and vocab while keeping track of a student’s reading)
·      Rec Pad (Record what you read from a prepared reading transcript. Make podcast or vodcast, or record sound/video resources)
·      Reflection App (have to buy online and download to computer. Can get group discount. Connects to your computer so you can use the projector.)
·      Retail Me Not (Coupons)
·      Rock and Learn Easy Reader 1 (Three short vowel stories that reinforce CVC reading)

·      Show Me Interactive Whiteboard (Draw pictures or add photos, write a message, and record with your voice.)
·      Sight Words! (Primary age with 3 levels of difficulty.)
·      Simplex Spelling (Combines phonics, spelling/word patterns, syllabication, phonics encoding)
·      Sky Writer (Draw a message on the screen, and immediately your plane will fly across the screen, writing your message as it goes.)

·      Sock Puppets (Create your own lip-synched videos and share them on Facebook and YouTube. Add puppets, props, scenery, and backgrounds)
·      Socrative-Student Clicker (Turns your iPad into clickers. This is for the students.)
·      Socrative-Teacher Clicker (Turns your iPad into clickers. This is for the teacher.)
·      Sparklefish (Can be described as audio MadLibs where you record your voice asying the parts of speech. When you finish, you can listen to the hilarious story. The feature where you touch the part of speech for a list of more suggestions is great for building vocabulary.)
·      Spell Tower (A word game. Find, swipe (or tap) words in 5 challenging modes. Make long words or use bonus tiles to clear extra letters from the screen.)
·      Spelling Magic (For younger students. It gives you a picture and you are to spell out what the picture is.)
·      Splashtop (Streams video and audio from your PC or Mac,  that allows you to interact with your powerpoint, word, excel, outlook, quicken, etc.)
·      SplitWords LITE (Work with compound words in a variety of topics.)
·      Stack the States (Teaches students where the states go. Like a puzzle.)
·      Starfall ABCs(Teaches the alphabet and sounds of the letters.)

T
·      3D Brain (Users can rotate and zoom on the main structures of the brain and learn about their specific functions.)
·      The Cat in the Hat LITE (eBooks ready to read or have read to students, highlights word being read, shows vocabulary when a picture is touched.)
·      Time Reading LITE (Very similar to QuickReads, provides several passages at several different levels and gives you a words per minute score at the end of the read.)
·      Total Recall (Create graphic organizers to assist with writing or comprehension.)
·      Toontastic (Students learn story mapping by creating their very own cartoon. Draw, animate, and share cartoons)
·      “Touchy Books” (Provides a young child a fun and interactive way to practice reading. The application is designed for children from age 1-11. The choice can be made to read the story aloud, or have it read to you.)
·      Tracing LITE (Use this online tracing paper to allow your students to trace a saved picture and add a word to create vocabulary cards. Pick up the pencil, select color, and trace, using the eraser as needed)
·      Track & share (Autism tracker. Track mood, improve habits, get things done, manage health, practice gratitude.)

·      Underscore Notify (Document student progress by taking a picture of student work or downloading a document, writing comments, then adding an audio recording to provide feedback or have student self-assess.)

V
·      Virtuoso (Add rhythm to a choral reading, interpret a story, or have a classroom band.)
·      Voice Thread (Create and share dynamic conversation around documents, snapshots, diagrams, and videos. You can talk, type, and draw right on the screen.)

W
·      Words Free (Gives you letters and you are supposed to scramble them up to make different words.)
·      Word Tree 3D Free (An open-ended game that encourages the player to create words using the letters available on the apples of an apple tree before the apples rot and fall off the tree. Loner words score higher points. A take on scrabble.)
·      Word Sizzler (Brain game and word puzzle about vocabulary words.)
·      Word Web (Free-Allows you to save words to “favorites.” This dictionary doesn’t have some of the features that you get with some of the free apps with ads or apps you pay for. ie. Audio, images, or translation. )
·      Word Zombies (A game that deletes one letter and students must spell the word correctly. You can continue up through various levels)
